    Billiard Sports – History Retraced

    Last updated 6 years ago

Billiard sports are great for spending time with friends, practicing a fun hobby, and competing for bragging rights. People all over the country gather around pool tables in bars, pool halls, and basements to show off their billiards skills and enjoy these fun and exciting sports. As some of the most popularly played games in the country, billiard sports have created quite the following among fans of all ages. Unlike other sports that are dependent physical strength and fitness, billiard sports put more of an emphasis on the mental agility and calculation, requiring players to think before they act.

While the exact origins of billiard sports are not officially known, there is a rich history surrounding these beloved activities.

    • The first known billiard game is believed to have evolved from a game similar to croquet in 14th century Europe. The name “billiards” has its origins in the French words “billart” and “bille,” meaning stick and ball.

    • Tables were designed to resemble the lawn where the game was originally played. Green fabric lined these tables and railings around the border kept the stone balls in. Players hit the balls with a stick called a mace.

    • Pockets were soon added to the tables, giving players a new goal to aim for. It wasn’t long before European nobility caught on to billiards and adopted the sport as their favorite.

    • The mace eventually transformed to hit players’ needs better. The thinner handle was often used for more difficult shots, leading to the creation of the modern-day cue.

    • Billiard sports became wildly popular in America in the 1800s. This popularity has only gained strength with time!

If you’re interested in getting more involved in billiard sports, then Triangle Stores can help you find the perfect pool table.
